How to compress a PDF without losing readability

Reduce an image-heavy PDF and check that the result still serves its purpose.

Before you start

A PDF, its current size and the size limit imposed by the destination.

1. Try normal compression first

Open Compress and start with the image compression option. This downsamples and re-encodes pictures while leaving text and vector content intact.

2. Compare quality and size

Download the result and compare it with the original. Inspect small text inside scans, signatures, charts and photographs at normal reading zoom.

3. Use aggressive mode deliberately

If a stricter limit requires it, consider aggressive rasterisation. This turns pages into images, so selectable text and accessibility information can be lost.

Check the result

Check the final file size and reopen every important page. Keep the original and use the least aggressive setting that meets the receiving system’s limit.

What to know

Mostly-text PDFs may barely shrink. FOLD may return the original when compression offers no saving. Smaller is not always better if the document becomes unreadable.
